Your Powerwall battery now comes with a brain

Big news for anyone with a Powerwall on the wall - or one on the wish list. Tesla has announced Tesla Home, and it comes built into every Powerwall. No extra gear, no extra cost, nothing else to install.

Here's what that means for your place, minus the jargon.

So what actually is it?

Think of Tesla Home as a very switched-on flatmate who never sleeps. One who checks tomorrow's weather, knows your power plan inside out, and quietly makes the smart call every hour of the day - so you don't have to think about it at all.

Behind the scenes, it connects your solar panels, your Powerwall, and your Tesla charger and car if you've got them, and runs the lot as one system. Tesla says other brands' gear will be able to join in down the track too.

What it does all day

• Fills your battery when power is cheap, and runs your home on your own stored sunshine when prices climb.
• Watches the forecast and your routines, so it knows a sunny Tuesday from a grey Sunday - and plans ahead for both.
• Shows you exactly what it's doing and why in the Tesla app, any time you fancy a look.

And here's the bit we like most: while the price of everything else keeps going up, the power from your own roof stays exactly the same price. Tesla Home just makes sure you use every last bit of it.

When the grid takes a break

We've seen enough Kiwi winters to know what "backup" really means: the Wi-Fi stays up, the telly stays on and the fridge keeps humming when the lines go down. That doesn't change - your Powerwall still runs the essentials through an outage, brain and all.

Tesla Home improves through free software updates, the same way your phone does. The system on your wall today will be smarter next year, and nobody has to climb a ladder to make it happen.
