Powerwall 2 Owners: Enquire Today About Upgrading to Powerwall 3 for More Backup and Savings
If you already have a Tesla Powerwall 2, there is good news. Tesla has announced that a future software update will allow Powerwall 3 to work with existing Powerwall 2 systems. That means homeowners will soon be able to expand their battery setup without replacing the system they already have.
What this update means for existing Powerwall 2 owners
Up until now, Powerwall 3 could not be added to Powerwall 2. Soon, that is expected to change. Tesla says the new update will allow Powerwall 2, Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3 Expansion units to operate together in one system, giving existing Powerwall 2 owners a much easier upgrade path.
How Powerwall 3 could help lower bills and extend backup
For New Zealand homeowners, this is a big step forward. If you already have a Powerwall 2, you may soon have an easier way to add more stored energy, more backup protection during outages, and more control over rising power bills without starting from scratch. Tesla says this backwards compatibility feature is designed to help homeowners achieve greater savings and increased energy independence.
Powerwall 3 is Tesla’s newer generation home battery. Tesla says it can deliver higher power output than Powerwall 2 depending on the setup, can provide whole home backup to most homes and includes an integrated solar inverter.
What system setups Tesla says will be supported
Tesla says supported mixed systems will include up to four Powerwall 2 units, one Powerwall 3 unit and up to three Powerwall 3 Expansion units. On homes with a larger three-phase power connection, Powerwall 3 output will be limited to 5 kW.
Why this is good news for New Zealand homes
This matters because many homeowners do not want to replace a battery system that is already working well. Soon, they may not have to. Powerwall 3 can also be added to existing solar systems and is compatible with all major solar inverter brands, which makes it a practical next step for many New Zealand homes.
Important to know before you plan your upgrade - $1,000 Powerwall 3 rebate ends 31 March
This feature has been announced, but it is not available today. Tesla is still describing it as a coming software update, in the coming months. So the message right now is simple: if you already have Powerwall 2 and want more backup, more flexibility and a smarter path to future savings, Powerwall 3 is finally becoming a real upgrade option. We suggest contacting us now, to get ahead of the expected surge in demand and to make the most of the $1,000 rebate that ends on 31 March
