What Self-Consumption Means for a Solar Household
Self-consumption sounds technical, but the idea is simple. It means using more of the solar power your home makes, while it is being made, instead of sending the extra back to the grid.
That matters because the value of solar for your home is not only about how many panels you put on the roof. It is also about when your home uses power. A system that matches your daily routine can often do more for you than a bigger system planned around bill totals alone.
What self-consumption means
Self-consumption is the share of your solar power that you use at home yourself.
If your panels are making power at midday and your heat pump, dishwasher, office setup, or hot water system are using that power at the same time, that is self-consumption. If your home is quiet during the day and most of that solar goes back to the grid, your self-consumption is lower.
It is a useful concept because it helps explain why 2 homes with similar power bills can get different value from similar systems. The difference often comes down to daily habits.
How solar power flows
If you have ever wondered how solar panels work in real life, the flow through your home is fairly simple.
- Your panels make power during daylight hours.
- Your home uses that power first, as appliances switch on and off through the day.
- An inverter, the box that turns DC from the panels into the AC power your home runs on, sends that solar electricity where it is needed.
- If the panels make more than your home is using, the extra goes back to the grid.
- Your retailer pays a buy-back rate for exported power, which is the rate you are paid for power you send out.
- Later on, when solar production drops, your home draws from the grid again unless some of that daytime power was stored in a battery.
A battery stores the power your panels make in the day so you can use it later, usually in the evening. In some homes that helps. In others, simple changes to when appliances run can make just as much sense as a first step.
Why timing matters
Power you use yourself is usually worth more than power you export. That is the core idea behind self-consumption.
In many NZ homes, each kilowatt-hour, or kWh, you use at home from your solar can avoid roughly 30-38c/kWh in import costs. A kWh is the unit your power bill counts. Exported power often earns around 7-17c/kWh, depending on your retailer and plan.
That gap is why usage timing matters. Running bigger appliances while the sun is up can help you draw less from the grid. Sending plenty of power out still has value, but in many cases it is worth less than using that power yourself.
Some retailers offer higher export rates in certain plans. For example, Mercury via Harrisons may offer 18c/kWh, capped at 500kWh per billing cycle. Even then, the full picture still matters because a higher buy-back rate can come with trade-offs elsewhere, such as different daily charges or import rates. If you are comparing solar buy back rates, it pays to look at the whole plan rather than one headline number.
What it looks like at home
Self-consumption is easiest to understand when you look at ordinary routines.
Working from home
If someone is home during the day, solar for your home can line up well with real usage. Laptops, lights, the heat pump, kettle, washing machine, and lunch-time dishwasher cycle may all run while the panels are producing.
That often means a higher share of your solar electricity for home use stays in the house. In many cases, this kind of routine gets strong value from standard home solar panels without needing many extras.
Out all day
If everyone leaves in the morning and most power use happens after 6pm, the pattern changes. Your panels may still make plenty of power, but more of it could be exported while the house is empty.
That does not mean solar is a bad fit. It usually means the system should be sized and discussed more carefully. In some homes, appliance timers, hot water control, or future battery planning may matter more than simply adding more panels.
Flexible family routine
Some households can shift a few bigger jobs into daylight hours. Running the dishwasher after lunch, setting the washing machine on a timer, or charging tools and devices during the day can all lift self-consumption.
Those are small changes, but they can improve how much of your own solar you use. You do not need to turn your day upside down. It is about spotting the loads that are easy to move.
Thinking about an EV
If an EV is likely in the next few years, that can change the picture. Charging a car during the day can soak up a good chunk of solar production, especially if you work from home or the car is parked there through part of the day.
That is why future plans matter during system design. Even if you are not ready for every add-on now, it helps to tell us where the household may be heading.
High evening use
Some homes do most of their power use after dark. Cooking, showers, heating, entertainment, and EV charging can all stack up at night.
That is where people often start asking about a home solar battery. A battery can store daytime solar for later use, but it is not automatically the right answer. The value depends on how much evening usage you have, what your retailer charges, and whether your usage pattern stays consistent.
How it affects system planning
Good planning starts with how your home uses power, not just how much power you use in total.
That is important because a larger home solar array is not always the better buy. If a lot of extra generation is being exported for a modest buy-back rate, the extra panels may not add value in the way you expect. In many homes, the smarter move is to size the system around actual daily usage and likely future changes.
This is also why solar panels without battery storage can still be a good fit. If your home already uses a fair amount of daytime power, or you can shift some usage into sunlight hours, you may get solid value without adding a battery straight away.
On the other hand, some households do benefit from planning for solar batteries, especially if evening demand is high or resilience is part of the goal. The point is to start with the household, then work out whether a battery, EV charger, timer setup, or different system size actually fits.
If you are comparing options, it also helps to separate 2 questions. First, how much solar can your roof make. Second, how much of that power is likely to be useful in your day-to-day routine. The second question is where self-consumption does a lot of the heavy lifting.

Yes. Exporting extra power still has value, and it is a normal part of how many home solar systems work. Self-consumption simply explains why power used at home is often worth more than power sent back to the grid.
Does low daytime usage mean solar is not worth it?
Not necessarily. It may mean the system needs more careful sizing, or that simple changes to timing could improve the result. For some homes, it may also bring future battery planning into the conversation, but that depends on the household.
Do I need a battery to improve self-consumption?
No. A battery is one way to store daytime solar for the evening, but it is not the only way to lift self-consumption. Timers, hot water control, EV charging patterns, and shifting a few appliance loads can all help, depending on your routine.
